Background |
Varissa has had a long career in Starfleet, despite a number of setbacks and coming from a family that expected her to join the Andorian Imperial Guard. Despite two of her four parents serving in the AIG, Rissa always saw the Federation and being more important than any one planet, even her beloved Andoria. She made a point to spend a couple of her childhood years in an exchange program with Vulcan, where she became a bit of a Vulcanophile before entering Starfleet Academy. Her natural talent with shuttlecraft and fighters let to her being in charge of Blue Squad, on of the few renowned academy fighter wings. She was also named captain of the Starfleet hockey team, proudly helping to bring home a championship in her senior year, the first Andorian to do so as captain. Graduating with honors, she was first stationed at the Earth Space dock with an initial rank of Junior Lieutenant and put in charge of Fighter Wing Delta, where she made many friends and was watched closely as a rising star within Starfleet. That came to a crashing halt two years into her career at the hands of disgraced former Admiral John Layton and his failed coup. During the fighting her attack wings suffered catastrophic losses and she was the only fighter to come home after defending the spacedock from the traitorous USS Crockett. From there she spend a year on Andoria contemplating resigning her commission before being approached by Captain Morinozuka Daiki of the USS Halifax, who convinced her to join his crew to help ward off the Dominion. Notably participating in both the First *and* Second Battle of Chin'toka as well as the Battle of Cardassia, Varissa distinguished herself as not only a brilliant small craft pilot, but also a more-than-competent helmsman. After the war, Varissa felt she owed a debt to Captain Morinozuka and stayed with him for a decade, working her way up the ranks to Executive Officer. Varissa would turn down many offers of captaincy before finally accept the position on the USS Vanguard at her mentor's insistence.

To sum Varissa up into one word is difficult... but likely those that have worked with her in the past would call her a "Firecracker". Her background as a fighter pilot and Helmsman before and during the Dominion War molded her into what she is today: confident, headstrong, brash and driven. She's also empathetic, nurturing and a team leader... All assets that have led to her first captaincy of her career. Rarely a shen that stands on ceremony, she speaks candidly and casually with her crew when not at red alert... but when the time comes to get serious, she flips a switch and becomes all business. Crewmen sometimes have a difficult time adjusting to seeing their captain hitting the gym with ensigns about or walking to the mess in a Federation regulation sports bra... but they should never be afraid to come up and ask questions, fire off suggestions or simply socialize with Varissa!
